Fabis Sahan
Karambi has empowered me to be able to do kitchen gardening using permaculture skills and I am now able to feed my children on a balanced diet. Before I joined Karambi, I would fear how to feed the children, and I would leave them without food because the food was scarce. But now after gaining skills in permaculture, I am able to sustainably feed the children.
Karambi has given me the skills to produce food to feed the children and myself on a balanced diet, and I can sell some to get an income. I have a group that normally goes to the market to do business – selling eggplants, tomatoes, onions. When my husband died years back, the challenge was food. But after getting the skills in sustainable agriculture I am now able to feed the children. And if I am empowered more and more, I will be able to do more agriculture and then sell part of the crops to pay for school fees and buy scholastic materials for the children. I have also been able to empower the children to learn the skills too.

Karambi was empowered with the skill of making candles and basket weaving in 2013 since then I have been applying the skills and the candles and baskets I make I sell them for an income. This has enabled me to pay the school fees of my son who is now in secondary school. I also started saving and I have bought a plot of land in Mpondwe Lhubiriha Town council and I am planning to put up rentals. I now represent women with disabilities on the Karambi Group of People with Disabilities board. With this position, I am inspiring many women with disabilities to believe in themselves and be the change they need.

Elisha Kato
My name is Kato Elisha I am 49 years old a father of 7 children and a person living with a disability (Leprosy), I am very thankful for the food forestry project because it has helped me to enquire knowledge on how to grow trees on the small piece of land and at the same time grow vegetables and get better yields, before the training I had a very big compound which was just used for children to play but after the training, I realized that the compound can be restored and be used for production. I opted to grow pawpaw trees in part of my compound because I was told that they grow quickly which I have also appreciated. Now, whenever I get out of my house I feel like I want to cover the whole of the compound with pawpaw because in just 10 months I am seeing fruits. I truly believe that in the next 2 to 3 months I will be harvesting. I want to thank KaGPWD through their partners for supporting me and the other members of my community.

Kabugho Jackeline
I would like to thank the Karambi Group for the knowledge they shared through Street Business School. Earlier, I was dependent on my relatives and neighbors and starting my own business seemed unthinkable. However, my life has completely changed after receiving the training. I’m not only running my own business of selling onions in the market, but also saving money for the education of my child.
